Science Week
During the week of Monday 16th March we had a ‘Science Week’ in school. It was a highly successful week. We had lots of fun and learnt about many new Scientific facts and marvels along the way.
Take a look at our class pages to find out more about what each class got up to. Here are just some of the things we got up to as a school.
Visit from Bristol Chemlab – amazing Science experiments!!

Do Something Funny for Money!
On Friday 13th March pupils and staff at Backwell C of E Junior School took part in a range of fun activities, as organised by the School Council, to help raise an estimated £300 for Comic Relief.
Everyone made an enormous effort with costumes and hair to look totally crazy and funny!! Miss Elliott judged every costume at the end of the day and declared a winner from each class, as well as a staff winner (well done Mrs Tapping!)

These winners were lucky enough to release their class balloon in the great ‘Red Nose Day Balloon Race’. This involved each class writing a message on a tag and attaching it to their balloon with the school’s phone number. We are hoping that someone will find at least some of our nine balloons and let us know how far they travelled. Who knows, some may even make it to foreign climes! We will keep you informed of their progress.
Thank you
We would like to take this opportunity to thank ‘Ann and Joy’s Florist’ (130 High Street, Nailsea) for very kindly donating the helium for our balloons.

During the day pupils and staff also played a part in creating a large money picture of a Red Nose face. Each child brought their donation to Comic Relief into school in a mixture of silver and copper coins. They then took turns to lay out the coins to create a very effective picture. Thank you to Mrs Birch for over-seeing this activity. It was a great success!
Children and staff had a lovely day and most importantly, raised a great sum for Comic Relief in the process - a big thank you to all those who donated so generously.

Library
Opening of the library for the borrowing of books!
The second Autumn Term saw the start of book borrowing sessions in the library at Backwell CofE Junior School.

Every fortnight, each class has the chance to go along to the library and borrow a non-fiction book. We have a good selection of books, ranging from tigers to trains! When it comes to actually taking our book out, parent helpers are there to help us.
Everyone has enjoyed this new opportunity. Ellie from 5C says “ I think it’s good to have the chance to choose a book in a quiet place and it encourages people to read more.”
