Class 6BG - Science Week
6BG had a really busy time during Science Week and we carried out lots of different activities. These included things tasks like standing on water balloons, learning about bees, visiting space in the ExplorerDome, finding out about Chemistry in the 18th and 19th centuries and building towers from spaghetti and marshmallows!
We thought we would share some information with you about two of our experiments.

Rainbow Fish
We used red cabbage to dye some white paper a beautiful blue colour. Unfortunately, this really made the classroom smell for a couple of days! We then found out that we could paint the paper using lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda and it would change colour. This is because there is a pigment in red cabbage which changes colour if it is in an acid or an alkali. The lemon juice, which is an acid, turned the paper pink and the bicarbonate of soda, which is an alkali, turned the paper green. We also used silver foil and eyes to decorate our fish.
Flowers in food colouring
We’ve been learning about the structure of plants and flowers in Science and this experiment tied in with the work we’ve doing. We know that the stem in a plant is used to transport water and nutrients to the rest of the plant. We wanted to see this in action so we put some white carnations in water coloured with blue and red food colouring. Unfortunately, the blue food colouring didn’t seem to do much but we could really see the red water travelling up the stem and it dyed some of the buds and the edges of the sepals and petals on the flowers themselves. Can you see the red tinges in these photos?
