Class 4C

We did lots of different activities. It all started with us making papier-mâché volcanoes, which we made from scrap paper to mould the design. We then covered the mould with strips to smooth the surfaces down. On Friday we mixed bicarbonate of soda with vinegar and it bubbled up. Andrew’s small volcano was the best it went over the sides.

Mr Phillips came in to talk to us about the moon. He told us a story he was told by Buzz Aldrin about how a switch was broken and they were told to use a pen lid instead to return to Earth.

Mrs Hewitt came into class and told us about different doctors and what they can do to help patients. She told us about her job as a psychiatrist.

On Tuesday we did lots of different activities including jam jar ballet (raisins dancing in vinegar), Friction factor (trying to pull apart two yellow pages), magnet mazes. Daniel enjoyed the perfect balance. We had to balance 14 nails on top of one nail that was standing up on a piece of wood. Daniel said, “It was hard but got there in the end. We managed to balance it for 3 seconds.”

Luke thought the ‘Party trick for egg heads’ was best, because the uncooked egg continued to spin after you tried to stop it. Luke thought the reason that the uncooked egg continued to spin was that the yolk was still moving inside the egg.

On Wednesday ‘Explorer Dome’ taught us about different forces: pull, push, squeeze, twist, friction and gravity. They made ‘Pop Rockets’ that were made from dry ice. We shook the rocket, put it down on the ground and it flew up.

Mr Campbell told us about bees and beekeeping. Freya Hw and Ben from 4M volunteered to put the beekeeping suits on and take out the honeycomb. Ben used the smoker this was to make the bees feel calm and they would fly off to collect pollen, instead of going wild and sting. Of course there were no bees in the hive, just honeycomb!

The week was finished off with an exciting assembly. Dr Allison put petals and a cream egg into liquid nitrogen. The liquid nitrogen froze the items and they were easy to smash. She also had 4 balloons, 2 that were filled with helium and 2 with hydrogen. Dr Allison didn’t know which balloon was which so she set fire to the balloons. The helium balloons popped, but the hydrogen balloons exploded with a loud bang and there was loads of fire.
