Class 3E - Science Week

We had filter paper, smarties and felt tip pens. We had to put the smartie/felt tip pen dot on a piece of filter paper and add drops of water to see if the colour would come out and what would happen to it as it travelled through the filter paper. The smarties didn’t work very well as the colouring is now different on them but we were amazed with the different colours that came out of the felt tip pens. The best were brown and black. They had blues, reds, yellows and greens in them.

We had fun in the sunshine playing with ‘Magic Bubbles’! Most bubbles pop when they land but these didn’t. If you left them for a few seconds in the air you could then catch them without them popping. This is because the ingredients in the bubble solution is different so they harden a bit. We especially liked it when 6S came to join us for our bubble fun!

Another investigation we carried out was building the strongest structure out of cocktail sticks and jelly sweets. We investigated different structures in groups and tried out different 3D shapes to see which was the strongest. We then tested them altogether to find the winning structure. The shapes that had triangles in them seemed to be the strongest.

A challenge we were given was to make the longest telephone using cups and string. A lot of us had made telephones like this before but the real challenge came when we tried to make them as long as possible and to actually be able to hear through them. It was sometimes difficult tell if they were working as we weren’t sure if we could hear our partner through the telephone or if it was just that they were talking loudly and the sound was travelling across the playground.

DT

In DT this term we are thinking about Pizza! We discussed how we might find out the
most popular pizza toppings and ended up doing a survey in our class. We found out
that pepperoni was the favourite pizza topping in 3E. We then had to design our
own pizza, thinking about the ingredients we needed and how to put the topping on
to make it interesting. Some of us have already made our pizzas and they were delicious!

Music Lessons

Every week we have music lessons where we are learning to play the pocket trumpet. Martin comes in from the music service and teaches us to read music and play our instruments. It’s quite hard to play the different notes but we are really enjoying
our lessons. We’re hoping to be good enough to play our instruments for everyone by the end of the year.

In Literacy we have been looking at writing letters. We wrote thank you letters to people after Christmas. We thought about how you write a letter, wrote it in draft, edited it and then wrote it out in a final copy. We then wrote envelopes and posted our letters. Did you receive one from one of us?
